The deputy of the Unir movement and member of the Citizen Security commission, Marcelo Diaz, he referred in conversation with CNN Chile to its relationship with the current director general of the Carabineros, Ricardo Yañez, whom he met while he became ambassador to Argentina during the government of Michelle Bachelet.

As indicated, Yañez was in that country as a Carabineros attaché, and for nine months they shared in that diplomatic mission. He further detailed that “I remember him as someone very institutional, who had a very close relationship with the rest of the staff at the embassy”.

Added that “He was a very professional, very institutional policeman, without political expressions”, alluding to the statements of Deputy Macaya, who classified him as “very left-wing”, and added that Yañez was also “very cordial with the treatment and a good relationship with the staff under his charge “.

Refound Carabineros

However, Diaz was more critical of the reform that the Carabineros institution should face, ensuring that a re-foundation is required “that the High Command is not enough, no matter how long it has been.”

Faced with this, he stated that a root change in this matter precisely for three arguments. The first refers to “very serious acts of corruption in a police institution that always demands resources from the State to be able to fulfill his profession ”.

Second, he raised a problem in the “effectiveness in crime control. There is a fairly widespread trial that in the fight against drug trafficking and crime, the Carabineros has not managed to be effective, “he said, adding that the current director general” is aware that the Carabineros and the State of Chile are not being as effective you have to be ”in this matter.

As a third point, he alluded to the fact that “Every democratic society requires forces that guarantee public order, but this must always be done in an unrestricted manner, respecting human rights.. And in this matter, Carabineros does not have a human rights culture, nor does it know how to carry out the task, understanding that it is part of its mandate and engages in systematic cover-up practices“Diaz sentenced.

On the other hand, he also referred to Ricardo Yañez, ensuring that “has issued a couple of rather unfortunate statements, and that today require much more prudence and prudence to be part of this process of re-founding the Carabineros ”, alluding to when he assured that in the social outbreak there had been no excesses by the uniformed or deceased.

Finally, the parliamentarian reflected on the responsibilities in the government of former president Bachelet regarding the reform of the institution, ensuring that the mistake then was “not having measured the depth of the Carabineros crisis”.

For this reason, it establishes that in this “re-foundation” that it raises, “there must be a civil figure who heads the Carabineros process (…) It is clearly not a re-foundation that can be left to the command of the Carabineros ”, he concluded.

Presidential candidacy

Marcelo Díaz also announced that he will be a presidential candidate for the Broad Front hand in hand with his Unir party. As he indicated, this decision was born from two assemblies where they assessed that “it was necessary to help the Broad Front recover its vocation to lead the next political cycle.”

As he explained, “one of the objectives is to draft the new Constitution and have it put into operation, but what it does is clear the rules of the game from a set of traps that are in the Constitution today. But the next government is in charge of carrying out a set of transformations aspirations for change”Expressed by citizens from the social explosion.

“What matters to us is that we are able to build a program project that echoes these transformations”added.

The deputy also referred to the figure of the deputy Pamela Jiles (PH) as a possible candidate for the presidency, especially after having won approval among the public, according to surveys, after promoting the project of the second 10% withdrawal.

Regarding her, the deputy assured that “we are deputies and we talk, but I do not know their project and program” in case of going as a candidate. But he also stated that “I have a difference in style and substance, and that is that it does not seem to me that the path of disqualification, of insult, allows us to build a better country”, he indicated.

“I am not willing to play with people’s pain to win points in the polls, and that differentiates me from Pamela”, declared the parliamentarian, adding that “I believe in the politics of ideas (…) I will not be available to any kind of hunting or demonization of anyone“.
