The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) denounced the “excessive use of force” by the security forces on the night of November 21 and has asked that what happened be investigated.

There are at least 37 detainees and 22 injured.

“The IACHR condemns the excessive use of force by the authorities against protesters on the night of # 21November and calls for an investigation into the vandalism against Congress, after which State agents indiscriminately repressed the protest,” the agency published Panamerican this Sunday in a message on his official Twitter account.

On Saturday afternoon and in the midst of the massive mobilization against the president, Alejandro Giammattei, corruption and the 2021 budgets approved last Tuesday, a group broke into the Legislative Palace and made use of several incendiary devices.

However, the organizers have identified possible infiltrators as responsible for this action and have stressed that the mobilization was carried out peacefully.

The fact that the Police did not intervene and the recordings of the moment, with individuals carrying folders inside the Congress, support the version of the montage to justify the police response.

“In accordance with inter-American standards on #Protesta and #DDHH, the States must respect the peaceful demonstration. In the face of acts of violence, they must identify the people -protesters or third parties- who put rights at risk or violate State property,” he said. added the IACHR.

Furthermore, the IACHR recalls that the use of force “must follow the principles of legality, necessity, reasonableness, and proportionality, placing the protection of the rights of all persons at the center.”

Suspicions and accusations of mounting after congressional fire

The unleashed violence caused even the Guatemalan Vice President, Guillermo Castillo, to request the Public Ministry to open an investigation into the events.

“It is urgent that the MP (Public Ministry) open a serious investigation into what happened yesterday. The vandalism events and the excessive use of police force are clear. The burning of Congress and what happened around it is raising doubts. I recognize the peaceful demonstration that it took place in the park, “Castillo posted on his Twitter account.

The press present at the massive demonstration in Guatemala City reports that the police fired tear gas directly at the people, instead of throwing them on the ground, as the protocols dictate.

The United Journalists organization have denounced the “attacks” suffered by protesters and also by journalists, such as photojournalist Carlos Sebastián, of whom he publishes an image with a bloody face.

In particular, they point out that there is data that suggests that the burning of Congress was “it was all a setup” to “justify bringing the Police out to repress the protesters on Saturday, November 21, in the style of the 80s.”

“The fire seems to start from the inside, and then magically someone takes two file folders to the ones that are uploaded and passes them on. Who brings file folders to a demonstration? Everything was assembled,” the organization along with a video showing how the folders are carried inside the building.
