The former Minister of the Interior and current candidate for the national presidency of the UDI, Victor Perez He declared that he did not feel sorry for his Carabineros support, when he was Chief of Staff, despite the political cost of resigning his post, although he managed to avoid a constitutional accusation against him, which this week the Senate rejected.
Pérez, who took over as candidate for the national front of the UDI, pointed out that “Carabineros has been harshly persecuted”, in an interview with LT.
Regarding whether there have been human rights violations, Pérez pointed out that “there is no doubt that in the face of specific facts one can agree with that statement. I don’t deny it ”.
He also declined to qualify the departure of General Mario Rozas for the Sename de Talcahuano case and explained that the departure of the former head of the Carabineros does not guarantee that they will not occur again in the future.
“Does the departure of General Rozas guarantee that there will never be an episode like this again? … I don’t know if anyone can guarantee it “, he assured.
Defense to Carabineros
“I knew that supporting the Carabineros, one of the things I did permanently during these three months, it was going to have a political cost, but I thought it was justice, “said the former Interior Minister and assured that he always had the support of the President.
“An institution that is subjected to the unusual violence that the country has and that was not prepared to face it, there is no doubt that it makes mistakes and situations that wish they had never happened, but those who point them out today did nothing. Carabineros works with a great sense of duty, but with the limitations of those who are not prepared to face events such as those they have had to face at this time, ”added Pérez, in the context of his defense of the uniformed police.
To the above, Pérez pointed out that there is persecution of the police institution.
“No carabinero gets up today to hurt someone, but their lack of expertise and their lack of specialization make them make mistakes and they are deprived of all state aid. Carabineros – let’s say – are sent to the streets to confront public order without being prepared and today they have to confront at least three state organizations that persecute them very harshly, ”he said.
“The State has a 22-year-old young man (Corporal Zamora) who all he wants is to be a policeman, who was sent to the streets to face public order without much preparation and today he has the State Defense Council, the Public Ministry , to the Institute of Human Rights, to the Ombudsman’s Office against. It’s a very shocking unequal deal thing. They do not prepare it and, in addition, they persecute him very harshly “he replied.
Regarding the departure of General Rozas and if it was a bargaining chip for him to stay in office, the former Interior Minister pointed out that “It is part of what is the national political life. From the beginning I said that I was not going to save myself from a constitutional accusation in exchange for a Carabineros general. I was never going to carry out an action of this nature, because it would also make no sense ”.
Candidate at the UDI
Regarding his officialization as a candidate for the national presidency of the UDI, Pérez pointed out that there is no contradiction as to which days before he had rejected that option, in whose conviction he assured that Pablo Longueira had a decisive role.
Finally, regarding his future relationship with the government, Pérez affirmed that he hopes “Let him know that we are part of a coalition and that I am going to work hard so that it remains united and with a lot of collaboration with the government. It is not a simple task, it is not an easy task, but I believe that we have to do it to achieve our ideas, our proposals, our sense of what we really want for Chile is embodied in the Constitution.
