Three alleged members of the Paraguayan People’s Army (EPP) guerrilla died this Friday in a military operation in the Cerro Guazú area, Amambay department.

“Our FTC (Joint Task Force) reports 3 deaths belonging to the criminal group of the North after confrontation,” published this Saturday in social networks the Paraguayan president, Mario Abdo Benítez.

“Three male casualties, all of legal age and we officially identify each one with the photographs, we can officially give that identification and we await the work of the professionals in the field,” said a military spokesman, the Lieutenant Colonel Luis Apesteguía, in statements to C9N television.

The deceased would be Lucio Silva, 62; Esteban Marín López, 36 years old; and Rodrigo Argüello, 24 years old. Silva is one of the EPP’s most important strategists, according to the State Attorney General, Sandra Quiñónez.

Kidnapping of former Vice President Óscar Denis

At the site, traces of blood were found that belonged to other people who may have been injured and were able to flee the scene.

“No member of our line was injured,” the military spokesman emphasized.

Apesteguía also confirmed that they are not indigenous groups. “They are not indigenous, we can also confirm that. The bodies will possibly be transferred to Pedro Juan Caballero,” he said.

The guerrillas carried uniforms belonging to the EPP and had backpacks and carried high-caliber weapons.

Apesteguía does not rule out the possibility that the confrontation could be related to the kidnapping of former Paraguayan vice president Óscar Denis, committed two months ago by the EPP.
