The Electoral Service updated the information on its website regarding the former senator of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) Pablo Longueira and appears as not authorized to vote both in the Electoral Register of Primaries 2020 and in the electoral data of the Servel consultation site.

The former senator, registered in Las Condes, appeared as not able to vote in the primaries because his party did not register candidacies in his commune, for mayors, or in the region, for governors. However, press versions indicated that he was not disqualified for subsequent elections and that was how it appeared in his electoral data, until this Thursday night.

Such information is known after the website The Clinic announced that the organization suspended Longueira’s right to vote and run for public office, as a result of the investigation against him in the SQM case. In addition to a bribery crime linked to the mining royalty lawIn the investigation, he was charged with tax crimes, however, he was dismissed by the Eighth Guarantee Court of Santiago, since the Internal Revenue Service (SII) did not file a complaint against him. The case was opened five years ago.

The Servel did not issue a formal statement on the matter and from the agency they indicated that by law they could not deliver this type of information.

There is no one more honest than me in Chilean politics ” Longueira said a few months ago during a radio interview in which he was consulted on the subject, after announcing his intention to lead his party.

This Thursday, after knowing his inability to vote, he declined to compete in favor of former Interior Minister Víctor Pérez.

Longueira issued a statement at noon. “I have learned that the Servel has disqualified me to vote and, therefore, to be a candidate,” he stated, requesting explanations from the body. Hours later he would issue a new statement accusing “a dark last minute maneuver” to prevent his application.

According to the publication of The Clinic, the Guarantee Court communicated that the former minister has his citizens’ rights suspended due to the investigation of irregular financing of the policy with money from the non-metallic mining company. The Prosecutor’s Office requests a sentence of 818 days against the historic unionist “colonel”.
