“The face-to-face modality will be the rule for 2021”, raised this Thursday the Ministry of Education (Mineduc), within the framework of the presentation of the school calendar for next year, which is scheduled to return to activities as of March 1.

The portfolio clarified to the holders, through a document with all the guidelines, that it must be “Protect access to face-to-face classes for all students on a regular day.”

It is also established that “Only when, due to health measures, it is not possible for the above to be fulfilled (in person), mixed education measures should be planned.

Given the possibility of the second scenario, it was specified that schools, high schools and colleges may implement two alternatives: divide the days into two days or alternate the days for different groups within the same course. “These limited face-to-face sessions must be complemented with distance training processes,” the document clarifies.

Thus, schools must submit to Mineduc, no later than January 8, an operating plan to open the doors to students in 2021.

The portfolio also suggests that the year be divided into quarters, since planning is required based on sanitary measures. So, the first quarter starts on March 1 and closes on May 28.

Regarding the subjects, the Mineduc indicated that the study plan should be focused “In the socio-emotional development of students”, in addition to the subjects of language and mathematics, since they impact on other learning.

“The way in which each school is going to start its face-to-face form will depend on the characteristics of each project and we will ensure that they do so in compliance with health requirements”, explained the Minister of Education Raúl Figueroa.

The authority recalled that in March a comprehensive diagnosis will be available so that each establishment can apply it and, based on this, can design a reinforcement guided by the Mineduc.

Figueroa He stressed that in Europe, for example, Germany and France, despite the outbreaks, have decided to keep classrooms open. This idea was ratified this Thursday by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which issued a statement stating that “Schools are not the main transmission factor in the community and children are more likely to contract the virus outside the school environment”. The organization even spoke of a “lost generation” of students, due to the activities that have been lost in the schools.

Alejandra Arratia, Director of Education 2020, stated that because the scenario is “uncertain”, the government should work in several areas with supporters, such as ensure that schools have adequate spaces to retake the classroom.

He added that Mineduc resources – $ 6 billion through a competitive fund- to adapt schools to the pandemic with signage, separator glasses and sanitation plans, “They should consider funds available to everyone without the need for an application.” He also expressed that the grant that is given should not be for attendance, but for enrollment, because in practice many students will not be present (due to connection problems or health risks).

Mario Aguilar, President of the College of Teachers, given the definitions that the Mineduc has taken, said that a work table where various aspects are addressed. “The health protocols that should govern the establishments, the infrastructure deficit and even the possibility that schools must hire more teachers to cover the long days”, he expressed.

Hernán Herrera, President of the Corporación de Colegios Particulares, indicated that the calendar seems “reasonable” to him, but clarified that possibly the days must be adapted to the mixed system, due to the fact that the enclosures do not have spaces to fulfill the capacity. “But you have to work to return to the presence in March”, said.
