This Thursday, the suspended mayor of Antofagasta, Karen Rojo, decided to present her resignation, after eight years at the head of the municipality.
Rojo was facing 16 days ago a trial for incompatible negotiation and tax fraud, for which she was suspended.
“Eight years at the service of my beloved Antofagasta is just the beginning of the great things I want to do for our city. That is why I want to tell you that I have decided to present my resignation as mayor. The fundamental reason is to continue contributing for all of you”, noted through a video posted on his Twitter account.
“As you know, they have tried to sink me over and over again, even taking me out as a secretary. The trial is another maneuver, but it is also the time to prove my innocence in court,” he added.
“I send you a loving hug, and remember that there is Karen Rojo for a while,” he concluded.
Rojo’s resignation comes just two days before the “fatal deadline” for the authorities who want to be candidates in the next parliamentary elections.
On the other hand, in Antofagasta Yamile Guzmán remains as mayor. In 10 more days, the Municipal Council has to define the new communal chief.
