Through a videoconference, the president of the Medical College, Izkia Siches raised the tone against the Executive, specifically towards the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, with an ultimatum: “from today we give the Government 30 days to fulfill its commitments and we hope to have results very soon ”.
“I think we were all very hopeful that the profile of the current Minister of Health was very different from that of former Minister Mañalich and, unfortunately, we are again seeing some signs that degrade the relations of our school with the Minister of Health and with the Government “he added.
In particular, Siches pointed to the controversy between the minister and the union regarding the salaries of the specialists, after Paris pointed out that the doctors already receive more than $ 5 million and that they also received a “substantial” covid bonus. In his opinion, he indicated that there is a “disconcerting situation around statements that elaborate absolutely false figures and also there is talk of a bonus that has not received, and I want to be clear, no doctor nationwide in this context of a pandemic.”
At this point, Siches remarked that “it seems to us that it is a disconcerting sign, in the sense that it could be in the context of distancing ourselves from the rest of the health team. We hope that, if tomorrow – it has not been demanded by the Medical College – there were a bonus, this would be for all workers in the health sector, as we have also done a deep analysis on budgetary matters, where there is a shortage, particularly in primary care in per capita matter ”.
In addition, he demanded that Minister Paris “establish public apologies to our entire community that has felt attacked.” “It seems to us, and he has also admitted it, he made a mistake about his statements, both from a technical point of view and also from a political point of view, in how he relates to the medical community in this pandemic context,” he said .
“A logic of internal elections”
The government spokesman, Jaime Bellolio, also entered the controversy, who attributed Izkia Siches’s attack against the minister to an electoral effort, taking into account that the Medical College is in the process of internal elections. In the elections of December 10, 11, 12 and 13, Siches is up for re-election and will have Renato Acuña as his rival.
“This idea of wanting to use a dispute with the Minister of Health, which perhaps has more to do with a logic of internal elections than anything else, I think is not appropriate,” he said.
According to the spokesman, “instead of seeking personal benefits, instead of seeking division and trying to hit the Government, let us see how we came out of the pandemic well and take charge of the deficiencies that had been dragging on many years ago.”
