The centrist Francisco Sagasti assumed this Tuesday as the new president of Peru, the third to hold office in eight days of political crisis.
“I swear by the country and all Peruvians that I will hold the office of president,” the 76-year-old engineer, who will govern until July 28, 2021, declared in a plenary session of Congress.
He then gave a speech in which apologized for “forgiveness on behalf of the State” to the families of the two protesters killed on Saturday, apparently at the hands of the police, in the protests against his short-lived predecessor in the presidency, Manuel Merino.
“We cannot bring these young people back to life,” the new president said of Inti Sotelo, 24, and Jack Pintado, 22, whose parents were present at the congressional session.
Merino, who resigned Sunday, faced massive protests in his five days in power after Congress removed popular President Martín Vizcarra on charges of alleged corruption on November 9.
Sagasti assured that his government will not be partisan, but “plural.”
Sagasti’s successor He must be elected by Peruvians in the general elections of April 11, 2021.
