73.7% of coronavirus outbreaks originates from homes, in social and family gatherings within the home, according to a study by the Ministry of Health.

The figures were collected by La Tercera and could partly be explained by a relaxation of sanitary measures in these types of meetings, contrary to what happens when traveling through public spaces, where there is greater awareness of the dangers.

“This makes us see that very good self-care measures have been adopted in the street, in the works with their respective protocols or in the commerce, but where people still need to respect the prevention measures is in social gatherings within the houses, ”the Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza, told the aforementioned media.

According to Minsal data, the The remaining 26.3% of outbreaks occur in workplaces, prisons, residences for the elderly, and hospitals.

Ventilated spaces and open air

Consulted by BioBioChile, Ignacio Silva, infectologist and academic at the School of Medicine of the University of Santiago, explains that “indeed infections are predominantly within the home or in family groups, mainly due to the fact that closed spaces carry a greater risk of catch”.

“In Europe it has been seen that an important part of this increase in cases is due to changes in temperatures and lower temperatures meetings in closed and less ventilated spaces are privileged, and that is undoubtedly one of the main risk factors ”, he points out.

Along these lines, he points out that it is to be expected that the same dynamic will occur in Chile, although -for the moment-, weather conditions still allow activities to be carried out outdoors and in ventilated spaces.

Regarding the end of the year holidays, the expert called for improving traceability indicators, but rules out that restrictive measures are a good idea.

“It doesn’t make much sense,” Silva adds, “if there are already activities in closed spaces such as shopping malls, restaurants and cinemas in some cases.”

On the contrary, he argues that education and self-care should be encouraged.

According to La Tercera, the configuration of infections has varied since the beginning of the pandemic. In April, for example, 13% of the cases came from abroad, while 25% corresponded to patients who were not clear where they had contracted the virus.

Back then, a month after the virus arrived, only 40% of the infections “were secondary to a confirmed patient ”.
