After two weeks of intense expert reports, the Carabineros Criminalistics Laboratory (Labocar) determined that the death of Corporal Eugenio Nain, on October 30 in Padre Las Casas (La Araucanía), was the product of the impact of a 5.56 caliber bullet. It is a war rifle projectile.

This was concluded by the evidence made by Carabinero, which was delivered yesterday to the prosecutor in the case, Carlos Bustos, after practically rebuilding the entire bullet, given that it had been destroyed.

For the same reason, analyzes were taken of the remains of the projectile, which was lodged in the costal area of the deceased carabinero. With this information, the prosecution will be able to enter the data of the bullet in a registration platform -which functions as an information bank- and thus determine if the weapon from which the projectile came out was used in other attacks in the area.

Another survey in progress is the trajectory of the bullet. According to sources in the case, Labocar has already established the distances and from where the attackers would have fired.

According to the preliminary results of the police teams, the hooded men opened fire from an area near the road, one 100 meters from where the police were.

The case is a priority, both for the Carabineros and the Public Ministry. For this reason, the police have in La Araucanía a team of more than 20 personnel dedicated exclusively to the collection and analysis of background information to find the whereabouts of the suspects. those believed to be part of a recognized radicalized group that operates in the area.

In parallel, for the Public Ministry, the investigation also has special relevance.

Therefore, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office of La Araucanía gave the High Complexity prosecutor, Carlos Bustos, the exclusivity to investigate the case. This means that their investigative efforts will now be solely focused on advancing the Cape Nain cause.

Prosecutor Bustos took up the case from day one, but being deputy prosecutor of the High Complexity unit, he also had to investigate other cases. However, due to the relevance of this case, where sources of the case suspect – violent groups with high firepower in the area, added to the factor of the high workload of the Public Ministry, he was given exclusive dedication .

The persecutor also investigated the attack on the Lumaco farm “El buen Retiro”, which occurred on May 30 of this year, an investigation where Emilio Berkhoff, an alleged former member of the Arauco-Malleco Coordinator (CAM), was formalized. This case is still in the investigative stage and Berkhoff is in preventive detention.

Bustos graduated from Law in 2009 from the Autonomous University, being the best student of his class. In 2012 he entered the Regional Prosecutor’s Office of La Araucanía, first as an assistant lawyer in the Nueva Imperial Prosecutor’s Office; in 2016 he became a deputy prosecutor in Angol and from March of that year until now, he is a persecutor in High Complexity.

However, in the Public Ministry they avoid talking about “proper names” when investigating cases of rural violence and thus avoid personalities.

For the prosecutor’s office in the area, it is the teams that should stand out and not personalize the investigations, for this reason, they emphasize that in the case of Bustos, he is part of a team of highly complex prosecutors, where they seek to specialize the work investigative in rural violence.

Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon, operations were intensified around the arrest of a young man who would have participated in the clashes with the Carabineros on Saturday, during the march to commemorate the murder of Camilo Catrillanca.

The PDI launched an investigation that identified the suspect in Talcahuano, after being injured and having been transferred to a hospital.

An intentional fire reduced to rubble part of the facilities of the Cruzaco municipal basic school in the Lonquimay commune, yesterday afternoon.

Fire units from the commune attended the emergency with the support of volunteers from Curacautín, who together with neighbors prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the light material facility.

The Curacautín prosecutor, Iván Isla, ordered that specialized police personnel carry out the first steps to clarify the fact.
