The ICovid Chile team, an initiative led by the University of Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the University of Concepción, presented its 14th report on Thursday, a document that warns that a slight increase in infections, especially in the regions of Arica, Tarapacá, Metropolitana and O’Higgins.

According to the latest report, with information obtained up to November 7, at the national level there is a statistically significant increase in new infections daily on a weekly average, equivalent to one approximately 10 percent increase compared to the previous week.

The change is driven by the regions of Arica, Tarapacá, Metropolitana and O’Higgins, which show an increase in their transmission indicator during the last week, which is interpreted as that the number of people that each infected person infects on average has gone up.

Guillermo Cabrera-Vives, academic and director of the Data Science Unit of the Department of Computer Engineering of the University of Concepción, stated that there is “a significant increase in the burden and transmission of the virus nationwide. All regions have this critical indicator, except for the Atacama region. This could be partially explained due to the plebiscite of October 25 and the increase in infections associated with the activities carried out for this reason. This event occurred two weeks before the data considered in this report, which is approximately the time necessary to notice the effect of a change in the contagion dynamics in the data. “

Regarding the number of infected, 11 regions maintain their level of charge in red and Magellan is, once again, the region of greatest concern in the country with an average of 47.4 new cases per day per 100,000 inhabitants.

“Magellan also shows a high proportion of positive tests (14.5 percent), which suggests that the number of infected is probably higher than the detected cases. The region shows a sustained improvement in both indicators compared to September, however, the indicators have stabilized at critical levels, “said the public health researcher and academic from the School of Government of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Eduardo Undurraga.

“Too the regions of La Araucanía and Los Ríos are concerned, both with an average burden of more than 20 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants and a high proportion of positive tests of 13 percent and 10 percent, respectively, “he added.

Meanwhile, in matters of traceability the researchers emphasize that “although These indicators have been improving over time, they are still far from the goal of 80 percent coverage. Heterogeneity is observed at the country level, with regions that show some of these indicators in green and yellow, and others that still show very low coverage in some of these indicators, which suggests that there is still room for improvement within the system. “
