The attacks and insults suffered by the late Republican Senator John McCain while still alive by US President Donald Trump, have had a “key” role in having President-elect Joe Biden lead in Arizona, a historically very conservative state that has now served the posthumous revenge of the ill-fated legislator.
The great popularity of the McCain figure in the United States and Arizona is given by its long career as a senator, spanning more than three decades, but especially as a US Army veteran who was a prisoner of war and suffered torture for five years in Vietnam.
That harsh episode in McCain’s life was precisely the object of ridicule by Trump on several occasions. “I like people who weren’t caught. (…) I don’t like losers“, he snapped, mocking, during the 2015 election campaign that led him to the Presidency.
MCCAIN’S “COMPADRE” SMILES
Godfather of one of McCain’s sons and “compadre” of the senator, Tommy Espinoza, a businessman and Democratic activist very close to the politician, speaks wonders in an interview with EFE of the Republican, with whom he did not agree on some ideological issues.
But their affection and mutual respect was so great that, a month and a half before passing away, McCain called his dear Tommy and said: “I want you to speak at my funeral, it will be an honor for me; you are my friend and I want that you make your comments “.
That went to the bottom of his heart and speaks of their inseparable friendship. Two years later, smiles as Trump loses elections, both state and national.
“Many people across the country, including Latinos here in Arizona, voted against Trump because of the comments he made against McCain.“, says Espinoza, while revealing that for the senator those attacks did not mean” anything. “
RESPECT FOR BIDEN, CRUCIAL
Beyond the denigrating comments, another key that has made Arizona and many Republicans, according to Espinoza, turn to Biden is the “excellent” relationship that McCain and the president-elect had.
“Joe Biden was close friends with the senator: they went on trips together, they had very loud conversations“, he comments, with a nostalgic face.
And this companionship made McCain’s daughter and wife, Meghan and Cindy, respectively, came out in public during the campaign to show their support for Biden.. Even Cindy, a full-fledged Republican, joined the Liberal’s transition team to the Presidency.
Thanks to this, Biden led in the voting in Arizona, an impregnable conservative fiefdom since the progressive Bill Clinton (1993-2001) won in 1996. The previous one to achieve this was former president Harry Truman (1945-1953) in 1948.
CONSERVATIVE LATINOS CHANGE THE SIGN
And the impact that McCain had among the conservative Latino population of that southern state, which shares a border with Mexico, has also been “relevant” for Arizona to change its political sign after several decades.
That’s the opinion of an experienced immigration attorney who worked closely with the senator’s office on “many” of his cases, Ray Ibarra Maldonado, also based in Phoenix.
“There are many independent voters and Latino Republicans who loved John McCain very much. Trump’s scuffle has taken a toll on him, not only here, but also throughout the country, “reflects the lawyer.
The truth is that McCain in life was always elegant with his political rivals, as when he gave the speech of concession of the elections of 2008, in which the ex-president Barack Obama (2009-2017) prevailed to the republican senator. A politician who built bridges with the Democratic Party, despite the fact that many of his proposals, especially in immigration, had a very conservative tone.
Now, McCain has been able to carry out his posthumous revenge: Trump will leave the White House falling in his beloved state, Arizona.
