After the overwhelming result in favor of the Approval in the Plebiscite, the figure of the former president of National Renovation (RN) Mario Desbordes, with or without his consent, entered the arena of the presidential race.
His role as articulator for the signing of the Agreement for Peace and the New Constitution, and his unrestricted defense of a social right, which faced the so-called economic right in the field of debate, resulted in his figure being considered as one of the winning faces of the ruling party after October 25.
In this sense, and given the lack of position of an RN in the presidential debate, members of the community related to his gaze have insisted that he decide to assume the responsibility of representing them with a view to the election at the end of next year.
In several previous interviews, Desbordes had more than hinted at his intention to bet on the top, but without neglecting reality, which means that today he is part of President Piñera’s cabinet and has been serving as Minister of Defense three months ago.
But last Wednesday, after meeting with the President, they agreed to review their situation in March, a key date to fully engage in campaign work prior to the elections for mayors and constituents.
On Friday, through a letter, members of his party made public the request for him to assume the role of presidential candidate.
In this sense, and in search of capitalizing on the triumph of the Approval, and taking over the leadership vacuum of the social right in his party, it is that overflows came out to mark ground.
In an interview with El Mercurio, the current head of the Defense portfolio said that he did not dispute that he is “a good presidential alternative within the party” but that they have to evaluate next year, he said. “And I do not rule it out,” Desbordes reiterated, looking at the presidential chair but happy from his current position. “Right now I am dedicated to being a minister. For me, my lifelong dream was to be a defense minister,” he told the morning newspaper.
Regarding his position for the approval within the right, Desbordes argued that, if the government coalition aspire to majorities, they cannot “entrench themselves at 20% or less – he added – we could aspire to 35% as some aspired.”
“The cartoon made by some that we had gone to the left after Sunday must be thrown away in a garbage can,” he said.
For Desbordes, although at this point what corresponds is to “turn that page”, based on the fact that Rejection and Approval were two legitimate options, contained in the agreement, it seems to him that it was “legal” for there to be groups in both options. What does not seem to the minister is that some have said that the only option for the right was their own, disqualifying those who were for the different option.
“The result shows in a resounding way that we were absolutely right to propose freedom of action in RN,” concluded the Minister of Defense who these days – according to the aforementioned media – is helping in “his few spare time” to search of candidates to the constituent.
Mario Desbordes does not rule out jumping into the presidential pool but his speech aims not to attract attention. He says that RN has good cards like Felipe Alessandri or Manuel José Ossandón, however, if he was the candidate, he would not have the full support of the party, at least not, clearly, of the section in favor of Rejection within the party , who also move their chips and poll former Minister Sebstián Sichel as a candidate.
The former RN member puts his cards on Chile Vamos being a government again and for that, he said, “we have to work together to find the best candidate. Who is the best figure is something that will be discussed in March.”
Candidate or not, what Mario Desbordes is asking for is unity on the right that so far seems fractional at least with its toughest face represented by José Antonio Kast. The secretary of state says that with the leader of the Republican Party “a lot of water has passed under the bridge” and “too much has been said in between.”
“He treated us as traitors the same day that he raised the unit to us. However, this is not a definition that corresponds to this minister,” he said.
Consulted by the proposal to strengthen ties between the ruling party and the Republicans of Kast, an option rejected by RN and Evópoli, and suggested by the former presidential candidate with a German surname. Desbordes pointed out that in the letter sent by JAK he says “clearly” that he does not intend to enter Chile Vamos but, in his words, “what he wants is an instrumental pact, nothing more, which is legitimate, but that has to be done. resolve the general advice “.
