After the death of Eugenio Nain Caniumil, a carabinier who was wounded this morning during an ambush at a road block in La Araucanía and who finally lost his life, from the “communities in resistance” from Labranza to Nueva Imperial blamed the State for the act.
The aforementioned communities repudiate and denounce “the violent eviction this morning of the Kiñel Mapu Maquehue (territorial unit in which there is a settlement of several families) by police officers, which ended in violent raids on the communities.”
In that line, they reaffirm their “legitimate right to defend our territory against extractivist companies, large estates and any capitalist policy that threatens our Wallmapu.”
“We hold the State, the Interior Minister Víctor Pérez and the Besalco Spa Company responsible. for the death of a Mapuche sadly used to repress and violate his own people ”, they maintain.
Likewise, they repudiate “the policy of violence and criminalization that the State has against the Mapuche communities.”
“We make a broad call to the Mapuche and not consenting Mapuche, to join the dignified fight for the defense of the Wallmapu,” they argue.
As BioBioChile learned, The property that was being evicted by Carabineros this Friday in Padre las Casas would effectively be used for the construction of a passing electrical substation.
This is stated in the eviction request issued by the Temuco Local Prosecutor’s Office on August 6, 2020: “In the property in question, an electrical substation will be built, under the responsibility of BESALCO, in order to distribute electricity to rural areas of the region, which to date is at risk of not being executed due to the taking of the land described above ”.
According to a complaint filed during this same day by the Intendancy of the La Araucanía region, Nain’s death occurred after the eviction – an operation that took place this Friday at around 7:40 am and ended at 8:50 am.
After evicting the property, a police car noticed that individuals were holding demonstrations on Route 5 Sur at the Metrenco Bridge in Padre Las Casas (same town of the eviction), so it went to the place.
At that time, and as indicated by the authorities, “A group of subjects fired shots at the police officers who were in said vehicle, which hit the 2nd Carabineros corporal, Eugenio Sebastián Nain Caniumil.”
