The trials of the vaccine against covid-19 in Chile began this Wednesday in Talca, where three men, 29, 49 and 54 years old, underwent the dose at the Maule Research Center (CIM).
According to the newspaper La Tercera, these trials were carried out in the context of phase III of the Janssen company, a pharmaceutical company belonging to the multinational Johnson & Johnson.
“In Talca we had the first case of Covid-19 in Chile and now also the first volunteers vaccinated as part of this clinical study”, indicated Rafael Silva, bronchopulmonary doctor and principal investigator of the CIM.
According to what Silva explained, the volunteers are men of different trades and who do not work in the health sector, who even registered on the trial’s website and after passing different stages, were the first chosen.
It is expected that in the next few days between 30 to 40 people will be vaccinated daily, reaching 60 thousand volunteers worldwide, as the Janssen company has scheduled.
“We have no roof. 60 thousand are vaccinated in the world, but this is competitive, therefore, we begin to vaccinate and we can vaccinate whoever requires it until the quota is completed “Silva said.
In the trials, volunteers can be inoculated with doses of the vaccine or a placebo, and after 20 days measure if they have generated antibodies. Then there will be seven clinical reviews, in addition to 24-month telephone monitoring.
“We are very happy. This is a tremendous opportunity, because the vaccine is the only way out of this mess. What needs to be done now is to show how long these antibodies last and that they effectively protect against disease. That is to say, that people do not get the disease or, if it does, make it very mild, ”says Silva.
