The Justice of Australia declared this Wednesday the extradition of Adriana Rivas, former secretary of Manuel Contreras and former DINA agent, accused for her alleged participation in the disappearance of seven people in the first four years of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.
The decision was adopted by Judge Philip Stewart of the Local Court of the State of New South Wales, who rejected a request from Rivas’s defense that had questioned the legality of the request for the extradition of the woman, who has lived in Australia for more than 30 years, where she has been detained since 2019.
According to the Australian press, The decision comes after the magistrate requested to reserve his final decision at the end of September, to further weigh the 20 volumes of material presented during the case, and following an extradition hearing held in June.
“I am satisfied with the information provided in the extradition request,” Judge Stewart said. “Rivas is eligible to be delivered”added.
Following the opinion of the magistrate, This extradition process could be prolonged if any of the parties decides to appeal the sentence. In this scenario, the case could even go to the Supreme Court of Australia.
The Chilean Supreme Court had already issued an extradition order in 2014, since the former secretary of Manuel Contreras The aforementioned seven qualified kidnappings between 1974 and 1977 were required for their alleged participation.
The former DINA agent filed several legal appeals and an appeal to obtain provisional release or stop the extradition process. However, he was denied several times.
