Strong tremor was perceived in the central area

An earthquake was perceived at 01:52 am this Wednesday in the regions of Valparaíso, Metropolitana, O’Higgins, Maule, Ñuble and Biobío, in the central zone of Chile.

The magnitude was 5.5 Richter and its epicenter was located 31 kilometers east of Vichuquén, on the edge of Maule and O’Higgins, according to the report of the National Seismological Center (CSN), dependent on the University of Chile.

The hypocenter, meanwhile, was located at 62.1 kilometers deep.

There are no reports of damage to people, alteration to basic services or infrastructure as a result of this earthquake, according to what was indicated by the National Emergency Office (Onemi).

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA) reported that “The characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile.”
