At the end of the historic plebiscite that gave the overwhelming winner to the Approve option, the opposition mayors took a step forward and signed the “United for the Constituent” pact, a transversal agreement.

It is an agreement that emerged from the municipalism that seeks to promote unity in the opposition in the face of the April 11 elections to elect the constituents who will be in charge of drafting the new Fundamental Charter.

The mayors Jorge Sharp (Valparaíso), Daniel Jadue (Recoleta), Gonzalo Durán (Independencia) and Carolina Leitao (Peñalolén) participated in the signing of this agreement.

Also present were: Claudio Castro from Renca, Claudia Pizarro from La Pintana, Sadi Melo from El Bosque, Maximiliano Ríos from Lo Prado and six other authorities.

In this regard, Mayor Sharp told the media that “in the opposition we have legitimate differences. We will have to find a way to reach an agreement, because indeed we have a responsibility to make the constitutional convention the space for transformations. democracy that Chile requires, and that will be done generously, with a lot of work in the territories, but mainly with this unit that is being established here. “

The mayor stressed that “it is Chilean municipalism that has been pushing the limits of what is possible in politics. The leaders of the parties have to listen to the message of October 25”.

“The Government has to listen, the Government opposed the constituent process (…) this triumph, although it is not from a particular political sector, without a doubt it is not from the Government. What the Government has to do is generate all democratic conditions, “he added.

Daniel Jadue calls for perfecting the agreement of November 15

The mayor of Recoleta, Daniel Jadue, also spoke on this subject, who began his speech by stating that “this is a triumph of the people of Chile, it is a triumph of the Gustavo Gatica, the Fabiola Campillai and all those who have mobilized during so long demanding what today the people have pointed out with great clarity. “

“The good news of yesterday forces us to face much greater challenges, and one of those is to advance in perfecting the agreement of November 15, in such a way that our native peoples are not left out,” said Jadue.

“If this constitutional convention is elected without protected seats, we will definitely put a setback that we do not need. If this convention does not make it easy for independents to participate in better conditions, we will have an obstacle that we do not need today,” added.

He also considered that “the tremendous percentage of the constitutional convention is a signal to the political system, and this is not the first time that we mayors are going to take the initiative again to correct what needs to be corrected.”

“The opposition today is much more united than the Government and Chile Vamos. They were divided in voting Rejection, voting Approve (…) we, all the opposition, went out to vote for Approval and for the constitutional convention, and for therefore we are reaching the time of unity “, concluded the communal authority.

Gonzalo Durán: “We are going to promote transformative content”

“This means reissuing the effort that began more than a year ago around the town councils and territorial assemblies. But we are also going to promote transformative content from the territories, because the mayors who, even before the social outbreak, denounce the Very serious inequalities, not only social, but also territorial “.

“Inequalities and abuses persist in Chile in a large part of our territories, and that is why the call is for unity, participation and transformative content to be managed from the territories, and we commit our efforts to promote this process,” he said. .
