During this Monday, and with 99.85% of the polls scrutinized, the president of the Board of Directors of the Electoral Service, Patricio Santamaría, delivered a balance on the plebiscite of this Sunday, October 25.
On the occasion, and after consultations, Santamaría referred to the participation, noting that “without a doubt we are facing the largest vote in the history of Chile, from the ‘voting’ point of view in absolute votes, and in addition to that, we also broke the barrier that has not exceeded since 2012 with a 49.2% voluntary vote ”.
“In such a way that from that point of view it is to celebrate the increase in citizen participation, especially of young people, but also of older adults who participated in this, considering that there was an important group that could not participate by provision of the health authority, precisely because they are in isolation due to COVID-19 ”, he argued.
However, Santamaría also referred to groups that cannot vote for other reasons: “There are groups in society that are excluded from participation, such as, for example, people who are deprived of liberty and who have their political rights in force where there is evidently a violation of their human rights ”.
“Also – we saw him the other day in the Chamber of Deputies – there is data that indicates that, for example, more than 100,000 mining workers that day work and cannot exercise their right to vote “, he indicated.
He also mentioned: “If you look at the registry, there are a significant number of people who are probably deceased and that we cannot eliminate as Electoral Service until we have a Law that allows us to update the register in some way, and finally, a very important number of Chileans, Chileans abroad, who in this case only 59,525 established their domicile, but the rest appear in the electoral roll of Chile, with their old addresses ”.
