At 9:07 p.m., the Electoral Service released the first count of the plebiscite, showing an irreversible trend in favor of Approval and the Constitutional Convention in this 2020 plebiscite.
Subsequent reports only confirmed that the story was written. Thus, with 42,115 polled tables corresponding to 93.77%, the data showed 78.25% for the Approval and 21.75% for the Rejection. In the consultation on the type of body that should draft the New Constitution, the Mixed Constitutional Convention adds 20.82% and the Constitutional Convention 79.18%, with 89.72% of the polls scrutinized.
A year ago, more than 1,200 Chileans came out en masse to march in the streets demanding changes in the middle of the social explosion. A year later, the mobilization was massive again, this time towards the polls, and from early on a high turnout was forecast.
Abroad also a strong level of enthusiasm was replicated and not even the rain in Paris, London or Buenos Aires prevented the massive attendance at the polling stations. After 20 hours, the Servel released the preliminary results, with 33.3% of the total votes counted. With these data, the Approval reached 86.59% (7674 votes) and the Rejection 13.41% (1188 votes). Meanwhile, the Constitutional Convention adds 86.11% (7453 votes) and the Mixed Convention 13.89% (1202 votes).
Another focus was the Plaza Italia, where in the afternoon hundreds of people came to the sector to demonstrate when the process was in full swing and the tables had not yet closed. And when the triumph of the Approval was confirmed, the Plaza Baquedano began to fill with people who came to celebrate to the sound of the already historic “Chile woke up.”
The results
In opposition they waited for the results separately. Meanwhile, the Communist Party awaited the visit of the Broad Front in its command of the Brasil neighborhood, Constituent Unit, it did so at the headquarters of the Socialist Party, and set a stage in Paris with London.
In La Moneda, there was no stage. The President headed a political committee to analyze the situation and finally gave up a speech in Plaza de la Constitución and opted for an intervention in Patio los Naranjos, flanked by his ministers.
“This plebiscite is the beginning of a path that we will all have to travel to agree on a new Constitution for Chile. Until now the Constitution has divided us, from today we must all collaborate so that the new Construction is the great framework of unity, stability and future “, was part of the President’s speech.
At the headquarters of the UDI, the souls were sorry, and the union senator Juan Antonio Coloma, avoided speaking of the result as a failure, and pointed out to the press that there are two options, or “lower your arms or understand that this is the beginning of a process”.
The first declarations of the union helmsman Jacqueline van Rysselberghe aimed to recognize the “categorical” triumph of the Approve, and said that the party will “immediately” go to work to be able to elect “the best constituents.”
Election under pandemic
Today’s day was a process marked by the pandemic that forced to take a series of measures that have resulted in long lines outside the polling stations to avoid crowds inside them.
However, the Servel has made a positive balance of the day. According to the president of the organization, Patricio Santamaría, so far everything has not been very different from how other elections have passed, with the typical cases of the citizen who did not want to act as a member or the case of the member who arrived drunk, as happened in Punta Arenas and had to be arrested.
