According to the newspaper “El Mundo”, López “would have escaped on his way to Bogotá.” For its part, “El País” indicated that “López’s objective, according to the sources consulted, is to travel to Spain, where his father resides.”

The Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez He left the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas, where he had been a guest since April 30, 2019, after participating in a failed military uprising, according to several news agencies and the Spanish newspapers El Mundo and El País.

According to El Mundo, López “would have escaped on his way to Bogotá.”

“The objective of López, according to the sources consulted, is to travel to Spain, where his father, Leopoldo López Gil, MEP of the Popular Party, resides,” said El País.

The opponent had been serving a house arrest sentence since July 2018 after being sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison for allegedly inciting violence during a protest against Maduro in February 2014.

López spent three years in the Ramo Verde military prison, on the outskirts of Caracas, where he was often denied visits by relatives and lawyers.

Human rights organizations consider him a political prisoner and both US Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump have demanded his freedom.
