Prosecutor Francisco Jacir submitted a request to the Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago on Thursday to set a hearing to formalize Francisco Frei, brother of former President Eduardo Frei, for seven crimes.
The case has been investigated by the Public Ministry since August 16, 2019, when Francisco Frei reported himself for alleged financial irregularities, through the company Inversiones Saturno SA (owned by the former president), to obtain personal benefit.
Jacir will formalize it as an author by misappropriation, unfair administration, fraud, malicious use of public and private instrument, fraudulent draft of checks and malicious use of certificate of deposits and false pledge voucher. The alleged events would have occurred between 2005 and the end of 2019.
On October 4, 2019, Eduardo Frei sued his brother and accused him of taking $ 1,500 million out of the cash of his company Inversiones Saturno in 15 years. All this behind his back.
Ten days later, on October 14 of last year, the ex-president testified in the case as a victim. During the interrogation, he detailed how he learned that his brother Francisco, to whom he entrusted the administration of his company Saturno, led the company into bankruptcy; how Francisco Frei lied to him with the financial statements for years, while actually taking the money from him for his benefit; the role played by his nephew Nicolás Frei (Francisco’s son) in the alleged scam, and the role played by his daughter Magdalena and her husband Pedro Yaconi in investigating the scam; and how he faced his brother when he found out what he had done to him.
“This fact for me it is very painful and unexpected, well It is about my brother, friend and partner with whom I even shared a piece for more than 10 years.. At my age this has been a very strong blow. The savings for my old age and my family have been squandered. In addition to this, in my capacity as former President of the Republic, irreparable damage has been done to me that I assume with nobility and before which I have had to put my face, an issue for which I hope that those who participate in this investigation will speak with the true, “he said at the end of his statement.
