Judge Tatiana Escobar left computer engineer Bastián Muhlhauser (26) in preventive detention on Thursday, after the prosecution formalized him for the hack of the Digital Government page. He was charged with the repeated crimes of computer espionage and improper dissemination of information. Earlier, he was convicted of robbery with intimidation.
According to the Central North prosecutor Alicia Ascencio, “On August 25, 2020, the accused using the app_base account, from IP 190.101.19.137, illegally and repeatedly accessed the Digital Government platform.”
Then “It published, together with the intervention of third parties, on October 9, on social networks, two types of files (…) obtained illegally, among which were massive downloads of exclusive databases of Digital Government”Ascencio said.
Muhlhauser testified before the PDI after being arrested on Wednesday. Said he works like cybersecurity consultant in the company Dreamlab Technologies since June 2019. “In August 2020 (…) I noticed a publication from the Telegram group AnonLeak, made by the purple account, where a pair of access keys to Amazon Web Service was registered, belonging to the website git.gob.cl “he declared.
He noted that on August 25 he tested whether the publication was true and “I managed to verify that the credentials were valid without accessing any further (…), since I did not perform any type of file download in relation to the facts under investigation, in response to the publication of the Twitter account called elturista_1” . Denied “improper access to the AWS platform, my action corresponded to checking if the actions were valid ” and said he did not know who was the author of the attack and of the publications on social networks.
His lawyer José Henríquez indicated that “what he did is a ethical hacking, which is the use of hacking tools by cybersecurity experts, but aimed at learning about digital platforms and verifying, among other things, their vulnerability and security levels against external threats ”. Added that “It would have no intention of causing harm to the population or obtaining economic benefit.”
