It has been 22 years since Universidad de Chile wasted a 2-0 lead in two games in the same championship. Those led by Hernán Caputto suffered the same problem against Palestino and Audax Italiano. Both games ended 2-2.
Against the Arabs, on August 30 for the eighth date, the U won 2-0 until 79 ‘, with goals from Walter Montillo (29’) and Joaquín Larrivey (51 ‘). Leandro Benegas (79 ‘) and a spectacular Chilean by Luis Jiménez (89’) sentenced the parity in San Carlos de Apoquindo.
Now, against Audax Italiano at the El Teniente de Rancagua stadium, Larrivey put the Blues ahead with a double at 10 ‘and 45’. At 72 ‘, Pablo Lavandeira equalized for the Italians and at 77’ Jorge Henríquez put the final tie.
The farras of 1998
To find a similar fact, one must go back to the 1998 tournament, where U had a great final reaction, but lost the title on the last date to Colo Colo.
First, on July 19, 1998, for the eighth date, the U defeated Puerto Montt 2-0 at the National Stadium, with goals from Pedro González (37 ‘) and Flavio Maestri (55’). Those of Chinquihue achieved the impossible and equaled with figures of Franz ‘Otto’ Arancibia (76 ‘) and a header from Raúl Duarte (88’).
The one of November 7, 1998 (date 25) was an even bigger party, since the U took a 2-0 lead against Wanderers in Valparaíso, with annotations by Clarence Acuña (10 ‘, definition on the line after Flavio’s header Maestri) and Pedro González (21 ‘), but the Caturro team managed to tie through Moisés Ávila (53’) and Francis Ferrero (66 ‘).
The U again was up on the scoreboard with a right hand from ‘Heidi’ González at 85 ‘, but could not maintain the advantage and Miguel Ardiman put the final 3 to 3 in the last minute. That game is remembered because, in the middle of the fight, midfielder Leonardo Rodríguez had to go to the bathroom.
