The monument to General Manuel Baquedano was installed as a new concern in matters of order and security during the demonstrations in Plaza Italia. If last year, after October 18, the monument was scratched and vandalized, between Friday and recent Sunday the figure ended up painted red and with a giant eye installed around it.

For the same reason, and after the Ministers of Defense, Mario Desbordes, and of the Secretary General of Government, Jaime Bellolio, they will face different positions on whether or not to move the statue, The police will be in charge of increasing the security of the monument.

For that, according to sources from the uniformed police, it will go from having a Public Order Control squad -ex Special Forces- to three, around the figure of the military, to prevent him from being vandalized, especially during the previous plebiscite on Sunday.

With this decision, then, how can it be explained that the withdrawal strategy in Plaza Baquedano applied on Sunday is repeated again? As well, the “protection” of the monument will not be “at all costs”, explained the same sources consulted, since the idea is that the police are not exposed to the hooded so as not to be a source of violence.

For this reason, the protection of the statue will have a preventive and not confrontational sense.

Senior police sources explained that, for example, these squads will be in place to prevent a group of 20 people from painting the statueBut if what happened on Sunday happens, where at a certain moment there were more than 25 thousand people in the place, it will be practically impossible to take care of the general’s figure.

The idea remains the same for Carabineros: avoid being an object of attraction to the most violent protesters.

Therefore, the security rings around the perimeter of Plaza Baquedano will be the same that worked for the anniversary of 18-0 last Sunday.

For the plebiscite and provide security outside the polling places, during the plebiscite, Carabineros will have 23 thousand soldiers at the national level and 6,800 in the Metropolitan Region.

In this sense, in the event of any violent demonstrations outside the premises, Carabineros drew up a plan that divides the Metropolitan Region into seven geographic zones.

Seven COP squadrons will be in each of these areas in the event of disturbances of public order in the polling places, so that the units can move quickly to the point they are required.
