Despite the fact that the Government and the Carabineros insisted on justifying the deployment to contain the incidents of October 18, “friendly fire” emerged from the ranks of the ruling party on the Executive. This morning, the mayor of Santiago, Felipe Alessandri, criticized the Government’s actions during the demonstrations and acts of violence concentrated in Plaza Baquedano and its surroundings, in commemoration of the first anniversary of the social outbreak in the country.
The mayor of the capital accused “abandonment” in the face of disorders and damage caused after the demonstrations this Sunday that ended with two burned churches, fires in buildings such as the Mutual de Seguridad and the Crowne Plaza hotel, looting in multiple commercial premises and damage to property public and private.
“I am surprised that the State of Chile has not been able to contain the violence. There was a lack of action,” Alessandri said at a press point, where he stressed his criticism despite his RN militancy. “That I remain undaunted because I am close to the Government? Friends tell each other things,” he added.
Along these lines, the communal chief said that the Government took an observer role rather than a containment one. “I sympathize with Carabineros for the tremendous hit, but what about the State? I felt it contemplative at times, looking at the cameras,” he added.
“I want to tell the State to protect Santiago, its neighborhoods, its merchants, its neighbors because we are not going to let it become a sacrifice zone. We ask for a more active role, not to let it do,” he added.
Yesterday, after conducting an evaluation in La Moneda with President Sebastián Piñera, Interior Minister Víctor Pérez made a clear distinction between the peaceful demonstration and the acts of violence, and said that “the vast majority of Chileans today lived a day of peace”.
The government defended the police plan, stating that “despite the efforts of the violent, we have few acts of violence to regret. What many feared, the Metro, the Transantiago, the critical infrastructure, have been adequately protected, ”and also attributing the episodes of vandalism to minority groups of violent activists.
However, this positive view of the Government is not shared by Alessandri. In this context, he added that “one cannot qualify as successful or positive, when there are neighbors who went through a stormy October 18, with pain and anguish.”
“When one assumes certain positions, one also has to assume the obligations of that position, we mayors are not in charge of public order. The State must foresee that this does not happen again (…) With enough regret I ask the Government to take all the necessary measures, adjusting to the protocols, we will be supporting them, “he said.
Finally, Mayor Alessandri sent a message to the neighbors: “We are with them, we empathize with their pain and together we will move forward.”
