The evaluation without Piñera of the first anniversary of 18-O: Government chooses to separate waters between the peaceful demonstration and the acts of violence

After 9:30 p.m., Interior Minister Víctor Pérez came out to deliver a statement at the Palacio de La Moneda on the day of the first anniversary of October 18, marked by the massive public convocation in Plaza Italia, and acts of declared vandalism in the immediate vicinity, such as the burning of two churches and several looting.

Pérez spoke after a meeting headed by President Piñera in La Moneda, who arrived at the Palace after 7:00 p.m. to lead an evaluation of the 18-O session with the Interior and the general director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas.

The President chose not to make any statements and it was his chief of staff, a tough former UDI senator, who was in charge of taking stock. But at the time of the evaluation, the chief of staff opted for weighting, clearly separating the waters between what was the peaceful demonstration and the acts of violence, far from the old discourse of the “powerful, implacable enemy that does not respect anything or anyone” that the Government lifted exactly one year ago. “The vast majority of Chileans today lived a day of peace,” said the minister.

“Today there have been demonstrations and those who carried them out in a peaceful manner did so without any difficulty. We cannot ignore that unfortunately minority groups carried out acts of violence inside the demonstration, when the brave bars and other groups carried out vandalism”, began by saying Pérez.

In this context, he alluded to what happened with the institutional church of the Carabineros de Chile in the Parque San Borja sector, and the church of La Asunción located in Vicuña Mackenna with Pierre de Coubertin, vandalized and burned by hooded men. “Burning religious premises is an expression of brutality,” he said.

However, beyond these episodes, the minister positively evaluated the rest of the day. “Critical infrastructure was protected (…). Despite the efforts of the violent, we have few acts of violence to regret. What many feared, the Metro, Transantiago, critical infrastructure, have been adequately protected. Thanks to the action of the police, we can say that the subway stations were protected ”, he said, in a defense of the plan designed to face the day.

He also took the opportunity to justify the role played by President Piñera, who chose not to speak, despite the fact that during the week there was speculation that he was planning to give a speech this 18-O. “The President is not silent, he is directing the destiny of the country,” he said.

In turn, the general director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas, assured that “today it has become clear who the criminals are, who the vandals are.”
