The Comptroller General of the Republic officiated at Digital Government Division of the Ministry General Secretariat of the Presidency (Segpres) to know the measures adopted regarding cybersecurity.

The above, after knowing that the servers of that division, where the Unique Keys are administered, they would have suffered a breach by hackers.

However, from the agency they clarified, through a statement, that there is no clarity that the hack that their servers suffered on Thursday has exposed data related to the use of the Unique Key.

The Minister of the Segpres, Christian Monckeberg, pointed out that a process of updating the Unique Keys will begin, calling for tranquility since there is no evidence that hackers have managed to access these data.

“There is no certainty that you can obtain all the Unique Keys and take them with me to obtain information on that matter. What there is is the -potentially- get and move on and get into an encrypted system, which eventually -after hard work- could lead (…) to deciphering a Unique Key ”, indicated the authority.

Specialists give peace of mind

When consulted in this regard, cybersecurity experts, although they do not reduce the severity of what happened, are aligned in a certain way with what is mentioned by the Government; that is, it is too early to determine the magnitude and if the keys could be obtained.

In conversation with Radio, the professor of the Cybersecurity Center of the Universidad Mayor, Pedro huichalaf, explains what is the main problem that could be generated with this cyber attack.

In Huichalaf’s words, the data obtained could be used to replicate official government pages to effectively obtain more confidential information.

“It is not that the database is with all the compromised keys, but the environment is there and there is application development and that is where the possible problem is, because someone could create a fake portal -as they often do phishing- that is, they make a page similar to a public institution and thus try to capture information ”, he remarked.

In the opinion of the general manager of Chile alarm group, company dedicated to cyber security, Juan Lopizic, the State in Chile has been adopting measures to face these problems, however, the situation is complex as computer development is advancing at high speed.

“I believe that the consciousness of security in the country must be changed,” said the expert.

Parliamentarians ask for improvements in the matter

There were also reactions from Congress, the senator of the PPD and a member of the Security Commission, Felipe Harboe, asked the Government to specify the magnitude of this cyber attack.

“The situation is very embarrassing (…) The most important thing now is how we guarantee people that these Unique Keys will not be misused,” said the parliamentarian.

The senator also mentions that the Government should place him immediate discussion of the personal data protection project, currently in the commission for the Constitution of the Upper House, which would increase standards in cybersecurity.

For his part, the deputy Miguel Angel Callisto, president of the Chamber’s Security Committee, urged the Government to “carry out serious work to improve the cybersecurity of our institutions.”

“I hope that the Government takes the weight of this situation and works seriously to improve the cybersecurity of our institutions, investing in the different technologies available to provide users with the highest level of security,” he said.

Along the same lines, from the Bank for Cybersecurity, Senator Kenneth Pugh Olavarría, made a call to change the Unique Code and also, to reinforce preventive measures to avoid these situations.

“Cybersecurity is not a technical problem. A 21st century country cannot function without cybersecurity. Our dependence on digital systems is of such magnitude and depth that if we do not understand the scope of our vulnerabilities we run the risk of seriously disrupting our way of life, “he said.

“We urgently need to develop and train a critical mass of people with adequate knowledge, in such a way as to prevent and react to cyber attacks,” declared the parliamentarian.

Currently, the investigation into the alleged computer sabotage suffered by the Digital Government Division is in the hands of the North Central Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office, from where they have already commissioned the PDI.
