He independent deputy Pepe Auth (former PPD) explained part of his reasons for not having voted in favor of the admissibility of the constitutional accusation promoted by the opposition against former Health Minister Jaime Mañalich for his management during the Covid-19 pandemic, which was rejected yesterday Tuesday in the Lower House.
The legislator was one of the seven opposition deputies who abstained from voting of the last day, votes that were key in the failure of the libel, which got 71 of the 78 votes in favor that it required to advance to the Senate.
In the coming weeks, meanwhile, the Lower House will analyze a new accusation, against the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez, deduced by the Christian Democrats and backed with cross-sectional opposition signatures.
In this framework, Auth pointed out that “Each accusation must be seen on its merit”, and acknowledged that he “was not in favor of presenting charges in this period.”
“At least,” he stressed, the accusation against Pérez “will be seen after” the constitutional plebiscite of October 25.
Anyway, he raised that “If we continue at this rate, we are going to imitate what happened with the right wing in times of Popular Unity, when, to express his criticism of the way of managing a certain political program, he was constitutionally dismissed “.
During this second Government of Sebastián Piñera, who took office on March 11, 2018, the opposition has presented seven accusations against executive authorities: six already processed in the Lower House and, depending on whether it was approved in it, in the Senate, and only one with favorable results, against Andrés Chadwick for his management as Minister of the Interior in the framework of the social explosion; the seventh is the one that points to Pérez, current head of that portfolio, which will be debated soon.
Other accusations during this period targeted the Judiciary: one in 2018, brought by opposition deputies against three Supreme Court judges, whose admissibility was rejected by the Lower House; and another one presented this year -in September- by the ruling deputy Andrés Longton (RN) against Judge Silvana Donoso, of the Valparaíso Court of Appeals, within the framework of the Ámbar case, which was later rejected by the Senate.
“Undercover MPs”?
The new failure of a constitutional accusation has once again damaged the trust of the various oppositions, to the point that some legislators accused that there are “infiltrated deputies” in the sector who have “saved” different government authorities.
In the opinion of the Socialist deputy Daniela Ciccardini, “It is unfortunate that there are, in a certain way, infiltrated deputies, that they did not allow the accusation against Mañalich to advance to the Senate. “
“I would like to know why they do not resolve their political domicile once and for all. I would like to know what their convictions and ideals are, because the truth is there is a group of incoherent deputies who are constantly saving government officials,” he said.
In turn, the communist deputy Karol Cariola He stated that in the sector they must “assume that the actions that we take from the opposition, beyond a supposed majority, will not always be successful”, since -he told radio infinite– “there are many things in between”.
“There are parliamentarians who voted against and abstained, several who have relatives in the Government (…) The names of Pepe Auth, (Miguel) Calisto and Gabriel Silver are repeated within that attitude that has to do with establishing political relations with the motivated Government, and for other reasons they deliver or take these actions in an unintelligible way ” , he accused.
Your lack of tolerance and respect for those who think differently @KarolCariola identifies you. You harshly lashed out at those who signed an agreement that opened the way to the 25th Plebiscite. Why such inability to assume that they may have a different conviction than yours? https://t.co/Nx5NuqbI6v

In Auth’s case, her daughter Yani Auth has worked at the Ministry of Energy as the person in charge of Organizational Development since 2015; Before that, he was in the National Consumer Service and the Council for Transparency, according to his profile on the Linkedin labor social network.
In any case, the questions did not go down well with the independent deputy, who attributed Cariola a “lack of tolerance and respect for those who think differently” and he called on her to explain “why (she is) so incapable of assuming that one can have a different conviction.”
Also recalling that he voted in favor of the accusation against Chadwick, he defended his daughter’s work in the aforementioned portfolio: “@KarolCariola has no doubts about muddying a professional woman who entered the State in 2009 and won contests in four different governments, never exercising a position of trust.”
And what is your explanation when we vote in favor of the impeachment against Minister Chadwick? You don’t doubt @KarolCariola in muddying a professional woman who entered the State in 2009 and won contests in 4 different governments, never exercising a position of trust https://t.co/Nx5NuqbI6v

In the immediate term, this Thursday should be defined who will preside over the ad hoc commission that will review the accusation against Minister Pérez, whose member deputies were bypassed on Tuesday – four opponents and one ruling party.
