He Renca Municipal Council, headed by the Mayor Claudio Castro, approved by seven votes in favor and one abstention he renaming of Avenida Jaime Guzmán, by Avenida Dorsal which corresponds to its denomination of origin.
As reported by the mayor’s office in a statement, the name change arose “from the request for various neighborhood units ” that, among their arguments, they put on the table a survey carried out by the “Collective Poetry and Territory of Renca”, in which 1,022 people participated and where 97.2 percent expressed themselves in favor of the name change.
“Other signatory groups also conducted surveys with similar results,” said the Municipality, which indicated that another compelling reason raised was that “The current name corresponds to a character in the history of our country who has no direct relationship with the commune, nor with its history and identity, in addition to corresponding to a person linked to a civic-military dictatorship and whose memory causes division among the inhabitants of the commune “.
“It had no relation to identity or a grudging story”
“This name change comes from the community itself, from community groups and from the Neighborhood Councils that entered the Municipality with a letter with thousands of signatures, “said Claudio Castro.
The communal chief stated that “there was a need to restore the original name to this emblematic axis and to leave behind figures that produced divisions in the community and that had no relation to the identity and history of the rancor.“.
The busy road connects with important arteries, such as the Costanera Norte, the Central Highway and the Apóstol Santiago and General Velásquez avenues.
The name change -approved by six councilors plus the mayor (there was one abstention and one mayor absent- will be finalized next week.
