The servers of the Digital Government Division were violated by a group of hackers, who from there accessed sensitive information from citizens.

For this reason, La Moneda started a campaign to promote the update of the Unique Key: a management tool that allows citizens to carry out more than 900 procedures through the different digital platforms of the State.

On October 8, the Government reported in a brief statement that strangers had illegally entered your digital system, ensuring that the situation had already been reported to the Public Ministry, says El Mostrador.

It is thus, adds the aforementioned media, as the Executive would have started a campaign to promote an update of the Unique Code among the population, on the occasion of the month of Cybersecurity.

Government reduces the severity of the attack

The government spokesman minister, Jaime Bellolio, confirmed the violation suffered during the past week, although he tried to put cold cloths on it while investigating what exactly the hackers stole.

In dialogue with Bío Bío Express of La Radio, the spokesperson for La Moneda said that government pages are regularly targeted by computer attacks.

“In general, government pages, as well as others that have a lot of traffic, are attacked by hackers. What was found here is that there was a person who agreed and is still under investigation exactly what he accessed and if there was any type of vulnerability with respect to the Unique Key or another ”, he indicated.

In this context, Minister Bellolio lowered the profile of what happened, underlining that it is not that each and every one of the Unique Keys has been stolen, because they are in an encrypted system.

“There is no such thing as an ‘Excel spreadsheet’ where it says ‘name, surname, RUT, Unique Key’ not. Why this is encrypted and how it is encrypted you have to have a master password and that master key is not violated ”, he stressed.

The Secretary of State said that before taking further action, they await the result of the forensic report that is being prepared on the attack, to know “Exactly what are the things that could be accessed, what kind of information could be stolen”.

“As soon as we have that more information of course that we are going to make known with the concrete actions that have to be put forward,” he said.

Asked if the violation implied a risk for citizens’ data, the authority once again mentioned that the Unique Keys are in an encrypted system, so in the first instance there would be no risk, although he did not rule it out.

“One thing is the key when one gets to occupy the Unique Key (…) but that is later encrypted and that encryption is what leads to a page that in turn decrypts and allows you to access. So it’s not like there is like a plain text, in which I say ‘oh look, Álvaro’s key is this, “he said.

Regarding the risk, he said that “there could, eventually, be and that is what we are waiting for from this report, both from the Cyber Security office in (the Ministry of the) Interior, as well as this forensic analysis is being carried out.”

Regarding carrying out a preventive update of the passwords, the Executive spokesperson indicated that “it could be that the next time someone accesses, they will ask them to update their Unique Password, but that does not mean that someone has a list of Unique Keys that may request information without authorization ”.

In parallel, the Digital Government Division issued a public statement in the same line as what Bellolio indicated, ensuring that no one stole the Unique Keys, but confirming the call to change it.

“Without prejudice to the fact that the investigation is ongoing, to date there is no evidence to affirm that there has been access to information related to the Unique Key,” says part of the statement.

Meanwhile, through social networks some accounts began to boast of hacking the Digital Government, making a call to change the Unique Key as soon as possible to avoid inconveniences.
