President Sebastián Piñera appealed to the Supreme Court to support the refusal of the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, to deliver emails to the North Central Prosecutor’s Office for the complaint for possible crimes in the fight against the covid-19 pandemic
In the document that Radio Bío Bío had access to, it is requested to reject the request of the Public Ministry to declare that the opposition of the Ministry of Health to deliver documents is “unfounded.”
Therefore, it is also requested that the Ministry not deliver the documents to the Public Ministry, as they consider the order given in the first instance “lacked any legal basis.”
On the case, Paris responded this Monday to the Supreme Court the reason why it refused to deliver the emails requested by the Prosecutor’s Office, arguing that the Public Ministry and in particular the persecutor Marcelo Carrasco, have hindered the actions of the Ministry of Health.
The holder of the portfolio, refused the request in the first instance, for which he forced the Public Ministry to insist by judicial means before the highest court of the country, in order to force the ministerial chief to deliver the emails of former minister Jaime Mañalich ; the former chief of staff, Itziar Linazasoro; and the Undersecretary of Health, Paula Daza.
“The seizure procedure is indiscriminate, imprecise and of an excessive scope”, because in his opinion he intends to access all correspondence “without demanding a minimum of, at least, relevance with respect to the facts that are the object of the investigation,” said Paris.
Along the same lines, he remarked that the Prosecutor’s Office “has directly hindered the performance of the ministry that I lead,” since Minsal officials are “working full time to contain the pandemic.”
