The Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, responded on Monday to the Supreme Court why it refused to deliver the emails requested by the Prosecutor’s Office in the framework of the investigation led by the persecutor regarding the deaths related to covid-19.
The holder of the portfolio, refused the request in the first instance, forcing the Public Ministry to insist by judicial means before the highest court of the country, in order to force the ministerial chief deliver the emails of former minister Jaime Mañalich; the former chief of staff, Itziar Linazasoro; and the Undersecretary of Health, Paula Daza.
At the time, he assured that acceding to this requirement put national security at risk and violated the privacy of patients, which is protected by law, on which points he insisted once again, specifying that these emails contain sensitive information regarding the purchase of medical supplies and coordination messages that imply “allocating police and military personnel” .
Paris responded this Monday despite the fact that he had asked for more time, arguing that the Minsal was overloaded and that he was poorly notified, in a 35-page text, in which he pointed against the Prosecutor’s Office and in particular against the persecutor Marcelo Carrasco.
“The seizure procedure is indiscriminate, imprecise and of an excessive scope”, because in its opinion it intends to access all correspondence “without requiring a minimum of, at least, relevance with respect to the facts that are the subject of the investigation”, Paris pointed out.
He also remarked that the Prosecutor’s Office “has directly hindered the actions of the ministry that I lead,” since Minsal officials are “working full time to contain the pandemic, even dedicating part of the day of our officials to extensive statements” before the Public ministry.
