At least two people have died in Italy due to the heavy rains caused by the storm ‘Álex’, which has caused winds and floods of an intensity rarely seen in northern Italy and southern France.
A man fell with his car into a river in the Cuneo area, on the border between Italy and France, and has died. The other victim is a firefighter who died in Arnad, in the Aosta Valley, due to the fall of a tree blown over by the strong wind. In addition, two bridges have collapsed in the Piedmont region.
In France, at least eight people, including two members of the Fire Brigade, are missing near the city of Nice due to flooding.
According to estimates, in just ten hours more than 500 milliliters of precipitation fell on the populations that are in these deep valleys, the equivalent of a normal year of rain in the area.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin have already arrived in Nice to know first-hand the department of Alpes-Maritimes affected, as reported by the BFM station.
Without light, like in South America
Darmanin has promised to send additional helicopters and firefighters to the region, according to the plan finalized after a crisis meeting in Paris. The president of the country, Emmanuel Macron, has added to the condolences. “Together we will overcome this ordeal,” said Macron, who has addressed “thoughts” to the victims and conveyed his “immense gratitude” to rescue personnel.
The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, has lamented enormous damage caused by the floods. “We have faced a disaster that I have never seen before,” he told local media.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents to stay home after flooding caused chaos in traffic after a local bridge was washed away by rising waters.
Around 13,500 households are without power in the region, where 850 members of emergency services personnel are being deployed. During the night gusts of up to 186 kilometers per hour were recorded on the island of Belle-Ile-sur-Mer, off the coast of the region.
