Quinteros inherits a shipwreck – La Tercera

“Get out! Get out!” Gualberto Jara yelled desperately at his defenders every time the ball entered the Colo Colo area. Ironically, since Saturday morning Jara himself was out of the Alba bench, after the board of directors unanimously approved the hiring of Gustavo Quinteros as the new coach of Macul’s team. This is how the Cacique came out to face Huachipato in the Monumental, after the ghost match against Antofagasta: with Jara back to the minor divisions and with the Chilean soccer champion as a new coach.

The depressurization of the dressing room after confirming the departure of Jara was noticed on the playing field, with a more relaxed and solid Colo Colo in defense, despite having a debut in the central position: Jeyson Rojas, barely 18 years old. The young Bryan Soto completed the Cacique’s youth patrol in the starting eleven, whose attack front was again led by Paredes. Further back, the determined but unsuccessful Fernández tried to compensate with guts for what his legs can no longer achieve, perhaps due to lack of strength or speed.

Huachipato settled in the Monumental not with the intention of waiting for the rival, but neither of drowning him with high pressure. Aware of Bolados’ speed on the right -always the most dangerous of Colo Colo- and Valencia’s ability on the left, the steel team attacked with a moderate volume of players and without overwhelming in terms of speed.

For this reason, the now ex-managers of Jara enjoyed clean starts that even engendered good scoring chances. In fact, the first clear arrival of the party was born thanks to construction from the bottom. Valencia connected with Bolados on the right, this yielded to Suazo, whose shot was too weak to celebrate.

The visit responded to the minute with another shot, also through a team play. Sendas arrivals predicted what the first half would be like: the action focused on both areas, although without too much danger. The 0-0 that recorded the score at the end of the first 45 minutes could have been different if certain individual attacks had been resolved better, with Valencia and Bolados as the culprits for their lack of expertise. It was precisely the 10th who suffered the wrath of Paredes after giving a bad pass, when the unchecking of the Tank had facilitated the way.

By no means did Colo Colo play well in the first half. Much less shone. His application —a standard level for a squad of his caliber— allowed him to sustain himself and not repeat any embarrassment. However, the structure did not last long after Campos committed such an unlikely penalty as the Cacique’s return to football. The full-back shamelessly grabbed Ramírez by his shirt until he fell. Rodrigo Carvajal did not hesitate and Sepúlveda converted.

Barely ten minutes into the complement and Macul’s were once again plunged into the hell that has been the post-pandemic. With the calm of the scoreboard in favor and the laziness carved in the faces of the rivals, as if their wishes were not to play again until Quinteros takes command, Huachipato began to manage the game. Colo Colo did not respond, nor was he interested in doing so.

The actions followed one another without endangering Huachipato. Any free kick in favor of the albos did not reach its destination due to poor execution or offside. Just at 77 ′ Jara looked for alternatives on the bench: the young Joan Cruz and the questioned Parraguez were entrusted to make their farewell something less unworthy.

Not even the silly expulsion of Escobar at 82 ′ – for a double yellow after simulating a penalty when the option of 0-2 was clear – made Colo Colo wake up. Despite the man less, Huachipato’s victory was never in danger. The incapacity reaches such a point that the man less than the steelworkers, simply and simply, was never noticed.

Quinteros inherits a shipwreck. A sunken ship. A problem that, at least in 2020, seems to have no solution.
