In less than 24 hours, The North Central Prosecutor’s Office and the Human Rights Brigade of the PDI collected evidence and testimonies that allowed the Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago to request the arrest of Carabinero Sebastián Zamora Soto (22), who, in the opinion of the Public Ministry, caused the fall of the 16-year-old adolescent, with the initials AJAA, from the Pío Nono Bridge, Friday afternoon, in the middle of a demonstration.
The carabinero will be formalized during this Sunday in the same court, by the prosecutor Ximena Chong, who will impute the crime of attempted murder.
Chong explained that the evidence collected corresponds to testimonies from people who were at the scene, in addition to various audiovisual records, including the recording of the body cameras of the uniformed men. According to the prosecutor, the evidence would show “the existence of conduct that, in our opinion, is malicious and, therefore, determined us to make the decision to request the arrest warrant.”
The accused police officer has the rank of carabinero, the lowest rank in the rank of non-commissioned officers. Zamora Soto graduated from the Carabineros School a little over a year ago and his first assignment was the 40th Police Station of the Public Order Control Prefecture, formerly Special Forces.
The fall from seven meters high caused various injuries in the minor. From the Santa María Clinic they reported that the adolescent suffered a bilateral wrist fracture, in addition to a closed head trauma. He underwent surgery and, until this Saturday, was under observation in the ICU and “his condition is stable and out of life risk,” they detailed.
The minor, who is studying at the Puente Alto High School, resides in the same commune and is a fan of the University of Chile, was visited today by Mayor Germán Codina. On the occasion, the communal chief had promised psychological and financial support for his hospitalization and legal advice in the case.
The events that occurred on Friday reactivated the demonstrations in Plaza Baquedano and in the front of the clinic. In that place, his mother, Daisy Alvear, thanked the call and appreciated the support of Mayor Codina. After that, she said that “no one from the government has contacted me.” Government sources assure that both the Palace spokesman, Jaime Bellolio, and the undersecretary of the Interior, Juan Francisco Galli, spoke with the grandmother and relatives of the young man to convey their concern for his health and the progress of the investigation.
The incident at the Pío Nono Bridge and the new videos disseminated on social networks were analyzed in La Moneda by the ministers Víctor Pérez and Jaime Bellolio. It was for this reason, they detail in the Palace, that the initial version of the police, which ruled out the participation of uniformed men in the event, was quickly changed. The latest version was delivered yesterday, around 10:00 am, by the head of the Santiago Oeste Zone, General Enrique Monrás, who said that “one of our police officers, when trying to arrest a young man, he loses his balance and falls over the railing. , falling to the banks of the Mapocho river ”.
After knowing the new images, Carabineros ordered a summary against Zamora Soto, after which he separated him from operational work and redirected him to administrative tasks, even before his arrest.
The fact also motivated the presentation of legal actions by the Children’s Ombudsman for the crime of attempted homicide and delay and refusal of protection, while the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) announced a complaint for attempted homicide and omission of Help.
