Armed men ambushed state security forces in northwestern Mexico, sparking a confrontation that left eight dead, six of them police officers, and seven other officers injured, authorities said.

The governor of the state of Durango, José Rosas Aispuro, tweeted on Saturday that the state prosecutor’s office is investigating the events. After meeting with the families of the deceased officers, he promised to find those responsible.

The ambush took place on Thursday in the municipality of El Mezquital, when the agents were attacked by a group of armed men who were waiting at a curve in the road, according to data provided by the state prosecutor, Ruth Medina.

Three official vehicles were damaged by firearms and six trucks belonging to the attackers were left behind with traces of blood, so Medina said that the attackers probably took injured or dead people who could be inside.

The Durango mountain range is part of the so-called “Golden Triangle”, a drug-growing area traditionally controlled by the Sinaloa Cartel.

The prosecutor did not say to which group the attackers could belong, nor did she elaborate on the two dead civilians. She only added that 60 state police officers, 30 investigators and elements of the National Guard were displaced to the place.
