Affected by COVID-19, a feverish and fatigued Donald Trump was airlifted to a military hospital Friday night. There, the president of the United States received remdesivir after undergoing treatment with an experimental drug at the White House.

Trump, who spent months downplaying the threat of the virus, was forced on Friday to cancel all his campaign rallies within a month of the election, as he fights a virus that has killed more than 205,000 Americans and is affecting others in its sphere.

The White House said that, as a precaution, Trump will spend “a few days” at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will continue to work from the hospital’s presidential suite, which is equipped to allow him to fulfill his official duties.

Trump walked out of the White House Friday night, wearing a mask, and gave reporters a thumbs-up gesture, but made no comment before boarding Marine One. Crew members, agents Secret Service and White House personnel wore face masks to protect themselves from the president aboard the helicopter.

In a video recorded before leaving for Walter Reed, Trump said: “I think I’m doing great, but we will make sure things work out.” He will continue to occupy the presidency with all his authority intact.

“It’s going well, I think! Thank you all. LOVE !!! ”he wrote in his first tweet from the hospital Friday night.
