His biggest “milestones” in Congress, says DC senator Carolina GoicThey have to do with your personal life. During her period as a deputy, she was gambled for the postnatal extension up to six months, but it was not until the middle of this year, says Goic, that she managed to close a cycle and a fight that she had been promoting for a long time: the National Law of the Cancer. That project – which was dispatched in August of this year – touches her closely, after suffering from lymphatic cancer, which forced her to undergo chemotherapy and away from her work for a while.
But now, in this interview, the senator tells that she is ready to close another chapter, one to which she has already dedicated 15 years of her life: her role in Congress. “Is not easy”he says, regarding his determination not to contest reelection or any other race.
His decision was discussed with his family and those close to him, in addition to those with whom he has worked during these years in the territory. In fact, this Friday the former president of the DC held a meeting on Zoom with about 30 people from her team, in which she explained and gave them the news.
In January you said that you will seek another term as senator. Is that still your plan?
Since that date, many things have happened in our country that have been a shock that we must know how to read from the political world. I have thought about it a lot, I have talked a lot with my family, also with people who have accompanied me a lot in my political career and I have decided not to go for re-election as senator, I am not going to be a candidate for anything.
Why?
It is not an easy decision. I really like what I do and I give myself, with a lot of passion and I believe that the people in Magallanes can be proud of the work that their senator has done and that I did as a deputy. But in this one has to act accordingly, I have always been in favor of the re-election limit, I am going to serve 16 years in Parliament, I entered at 32, today I am 47, and it seems to me that it is enough to complete a cycle and start other.
Did you notify DC of your decision?
I spoke with my party president, also with those closest to me, but it is a very personal decision.
And now what do you expect to dedicate?
I am not retiring from politics. What happens is that I feel that Parliament is a straitjacket to connect with the people. I want to start a cycle in a space that is much closer to citizens. Perhaps a foundation, but that is something that I will build in the time that remains. I also want to spend more time with my family.
Do you see anyone who could compete for your spot?
I wish it was a DC. Now, we Magellanic want our representatives to be from Magellan. A comrade, Gonzalo Sáez, who is president of the Medical College, would be a great candidate.
When she defended the issue of ending the reelection, they accused her of wanting to “remove Senator Bianchi as secretary.” What do you answer now?
Those who know me know that I have always acted out of conviction. Now, I am not surprised, of Senator Bianchi we have seen the maximum political little things. She was able when I was sick to question my cancer for electoral purposes. This week he launched his candidacy as a deputy and his son as a senator, and this way of clinging to the power of a family is shameful.
Will you continue to contribute to DC?
I don’t think I owe any debt to DC, to take the lead (laughs). I will continue to collaborate and honor the values and principles of Christian humanism, which are more necessary today than ever.
This week the opposition did not reach a unitary agreement for the primaries of governors. How do you see it?
I like this pact that was signed and the possibility of making primaries, that it is the citizenship that defines our candidates. I trust that in the case of mayors we will reach an agreement to guarantee the eligibility of the candidates.
Did they fail as a sector?
What has been achieved as a pact, where the PS, the PR, the PPD, the DC, Citizens are, I am happy. There are other things that have been in evidence. The performance of the FA speaks for itself, they have committed the worst practices, which they have criticized and they will have to answer to the public for that. One of the results of this week is that there are many people disillusioned with the offer that the FA made and that they did not comply.
Does it hold the FA responsible?
What you cannot do in politics is sit down to negotiate when at the same time you are doing something else. Those are basic things.
Should the DC position itself in this pact for the rest of the elections?
Yes. In this the DC played an important role, establishing the primary mechanism and creating bridges for this pact. I hope it is a first step to generate the necessary unity to govern.
Is it favorable for the DC to stay away from the FA and the PC?
Our country needs to rebuild the route, generate agreements that are majority, and I hope that this agreement is the beginning of recovering this path.
Can you without being with everyone?
It is clear that there are things that cannot be done by force.
Some said that this could be the reissue of the Concertación. Do you apply that metaphor?
We permanently fall into this practice of looking back and the challenges for Chile today are not the romanticism of reissuing it again, but are for the future, with different logics.
What do you think of the candidacy of Daniel Jadue?
He is in the traditional logic of generating controversy, rather than in a different project, which is the one I want for Chile.
