With the aim of bringing audiovisual culture closer to Chileans, Chilemonos and OndaMedia have started an innovative alliance that begins today with an unprecedented online edition of the event. The initiative aims to bring the festival to all houses in the national territory in times of confinement and social distance.
The ninth version of the Chilemonos International Animation Festival adapted to the complexities brought by the pandemic, opting for a virtual development through an alliance with OndaMedia, an audiovisual platform developed by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage of Chile. which aims to bring national cinema closer to all citizens, similar to what the Festival seeks with national and Latin American animation.
“This alliance with OndaMedia is a great step for Chilemonos, as it expands our coverage as a festival nationwide, achieving the objective of decentralizing and allowing us to reach a large audience with first-rate animation,” says “Wilo” Gómez, festival director.
As of today, September 30 and until October 24, the festival becomes the first to arrive on the Chilean streaming platform, to bring its competition to all corners of Chile for free and for a limited time.
Will be 60 short films, 15 series and 2 feature films which will be available on OndaMedia, thus adding a total of almost 12 hours of programming.
Ian Goldschmied, OndaMedia Platform Director, assures that “at OndaMedia we are very happy with the alliance we have established with the Chilemonos festival; It is a true privilege to be able to offer our community of users free access to a selection of the best and latest animation short films in the world; definitely September and October are going to be to become cute with the festival on OndaMedia ”.
It should be noted that OndaMedia has had close to 2 million views this year, almost six times more than in 2019, where they accounted for 360,000.
Festival in times of pandemic
Chilemonos is the only animation festival in Latin America to qualify for the Oscars in the categories of Latin and International Short Films; The competition is made up of 6 categories: Latin American Animated Feature Films, International Animated Short Films, Latin American Animated Short Films, International School Short Films, Latin American School Short Films and Latin American Series, from which those that met the requirements expressed in the Festival’s bases are chosen. .
“Despite the circumstances we had to adapt to, both the judges and the participants made everything easier with the excellent disposition they had. On the other hand, the level of development of the animated pieces presented in this version of the festival made it very difficult to define the winning works, since many stood out and showed that Latin America is a hotbed of talent in animation “, states” Wilo ”Gomez.
“Chilemonos is already a benchmark in the world of animation, a class A festival that qualifies for the Oscars. It is to be applauded the level of the selection to which they have us accustomed; The category that I had the privilege of being a judge in allowed me to see so many animated shorts with a very high level of quality. Every year I confirm that the new generations refresh the environment with profound proposals and impeccable technique. The diversity of cultures is something really inspiring! ”, Indicates Karla Castañeda, Mexican director and member of the jury at the International School Short Film Competition.
Regarding the online version of the festival, he assures that “it is always preferable to be present, to live together, to meet the people behind the short films, but this year it was all unexpected”.
