At least 53 schools in the Metropolitan Region have requested to reopen their doors to return to face-to-face classes, which have been suspended since March, when the Covid-19 pandemic arrived in Chile.
Several of them correspond to schools in the eastern sector of Santiago, in which they finalize the preparations to return to the classrooms: they aim to put the main focus of the eventual return on the major courses, on all the Middle Quarters, and on the emotional aspect; return that will be voluntary and gradual, post today The Mercury.
One of them is the Saint George, in Vitacura, which in March became the first school in the country to be quarantined due to a coronavirus outbreak. Its rector, Father David Halm, stated that beyond the efforts of these months in online classes, “it is not the same as seeing oneself” since “we are more than the presence on a screen or a name on WhatsApp (… We want the school to once again be a meeting place, a place for socializing, a balm for the members of the community to regain energy and to face this end of the year “.
As stated, 62 percent of the attorneys support the return.
In Las Condes the rector of the Padre Hurtado and Juanita de Los Andes schools, Alejandro Jordán, considered it necessary to take the weight of “the relevance that the educational system has as a link” and stressed that being “gradually resuming activities is not irrelevant regarding how many possibilities there are that many families can also resume their work”.
From the Huelén School, Vitacura, the director Carola Reyes explained that they will start with Middle Quarters and then Middle Third. For the former “there will be rehearsals for the Transition Test (replacement of the PSU), electives, vocational workshops and dynamics of emotional containment.”
Among teachers there are apprehensions, but also conviction that progress will be gradual: “Little by little they have been understanding the process,” said Jorge Ramos, director of secondary education at Colegio Pumahue, Peñalolén; It has been key to be “super open to dialogue,” he stressed.
In turn, Claudia Olave, professor of Physical Education at Mariano Schoenstatt School (Providencia) stressed that “everyone who has a basic condition or apprehension will always be safeguarded and protected”; and also, above all there is the conviction that “the socio-emotional part is super important to address.”
Another venue that hopes to reopen is the Tabancura School, in Vitacura, where some students have said that they look forward to returning to the classroom.
THE SATISFACTION OF THE MINISTER VERSUS THE APRENSION OF THE MAGUSTERY
The Minister of Education, Raul Figueroa, which has reiterated the need to resume face-to-face classes, said in the morning that there is an evident interest in “opening schools that aims to take care of the need of students to recover their school experience.
Thus, he valued “the effort that the educational communities are making.”
For his part, the president of the College of Teachers, Mario Aguilar placeholder image, stated that these establishments have “very special conditions”, so “we are concerned that this is used as a kind of model for the rest of the country.”
Also, in his opinion, “by no means” are the conditions to return to face-to-face classes, since – he warns – the sources of contagion can be very high and the vast majority of schools would not have what is necessary for a safe return, along with questioning that the issue of public transport on eventual crowds at peak hours would not have been considered.
