During the afternoon of this Tuesday, the Senate rejected the indication presented by the opposition parliamentarians Isabel Allende (PS) and Juan Ignacio Latorre (RD) in the Migration Law project.
The controversial text sought to allow a migrant, upon entering Chile as a tourist, to request a document at the border that would allow him to work in the country, what the ruling party called a “work tourism visa.
The idea generated from the beginning the rejection of the Government and its parliamentarians, and even caused division within the opposition, which was reflected in the vote, where it was finally rejected by 16 in favor, 35 against and 0 abstentions.
Common sense prevailed. Countries must have safe, orderly and regular migration. And what the indication raised was to establish labor tourism, ”Senator Francisco Chahuán (RN) said after the vote.
For his part, Senator José Miguel Inzulsa (PS) also sought to replace this amendment and establish that migrants could process said permit at the consulate in their respective country of origin, which at the time was considered an “intermediate solution.”
However, these options were rejected and were without effect, although the discussion in particular, which began at 4:00 p.m., continued its process in the Upper House.
