In the midst of the recovery process suffered after the strong blow generated by the coronavirus crisis in the aeronautical industry, airlines continued to report a partial return to their operations due to the deconfinement measures decreed by the authorities.
The low-cost airline SKY reported this Monday that as of today it will reactivate all of its national routes; while Brazil and Peru will join in October.
This, after the announcement made by the authorities last week to allow interregional flights between those communes that are in phase 3, 4 and 5 of the “Step by Step” plan of the Ministry of Health.
“During all these months we have worked hard to prepare ourselves to make safe trips, activating all the necessary sanitary measures, to avoid any contagion and so that our passengers and crew can fly in peace,” said SKY CEO José Ignacio Dougnac.
Meanwhile, from JetSmart they indicated that for the month of October, and hand in hand with the latest government announcement on the opening of trips between regions, “We will see a 40% recovery in our domestic flights, where we plan to end 2020 operating between 60% and 70% of our capacity.”
Regarding international operations, they indicated that they hope to reactivate flights to Colombia and Peru in October as soon as border restrictions allow it.
The airline currently operates 13 destinations in Chile in the cities of Arica, Iquique, Calama, Antofagasta, Copiapó, La Serena, Santiago, Concepción, Temuco, Valdivia, Puerto Montt, Coihaique and Punta Arenas, where it totals 30 domestic routes.
In the case of Latam Airlines, the company reported in mid-September that in recent months it has shown a gradual recovery of its operation.
In June, it operated 6.4%, in July 9.2% and in August it reached 13.9% of its capacity (measured in “available seat-kilometer” -ASK), in relation to the same period of 2019.
These results came after a drastic reduction in Latam’s operation in April and May (5.7% and 6.7% respectively), due to Covid -19.
Despite the process of restarting flights, the authority estimates that it will take several years to reach the flow of passengers prior to the pandemic.
The emergency produced a break in the growth trend that had been registered in the last decade, with annual growth rates around 10% on average.
According to the latest projection of the Civil Aeronautics Board (JAC), dependent on the Ministry of Transport, a 59% reduction in passenger traffic in Chile is expected this year, as a result of the impact of Covid-19 in the commercial airline industry. . Although in their most pessimistic scenario they do not rule out that even the fall could be up to 70%.
As of today, SKY is flying to a total of 12 regions that include the destinations of Arica, Iquique, Calama, Antofagasta, Copiapó, La Serena, Concepción, Temuco, Valdivia, Puerto Montt, Balmaceda and Punta Arenas.
In addition to these routes, starting in October, SKY will resume flights to Osorno with a frequency of five weekly trips, which will be scheduled for Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, being the only airline that will be flying to this destination .
“The trips that start today are very good news for everyone because they will increase the connectivity of our country and also reactivate the tourism industry that has been so affected during these months of pandemic,” said SKY CEO, José Ignacio Dougnac .Dougnac.
For the next few weeks, the frequency of flights to Copiapó will also increase, going to have two weekly flights for Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Starting this Thursday, October 1, SKY will resume its flights to Brazil almost seven months after the interruption of its operations due to the coronavirus crisis.
Thus, the airline will resume flights to Sao Paulo, on Mondays and Fridays; and to Rio de Janeiro, on Mondays and Thursdays.
Regarding its domestic operation in Peru, and after the announcement by the authorities of that country to allow international flights as of October, the airline will begin flying to Lima as of next Monday, the 5th, with a frequency of four flights to the week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
