The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this Saturday that there are current arrest warrants against members of the Federal Police and the Army for the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa, case that turns six.
“Warrants have been issued for the arrest of soldiers who are going to be executed. Zero impunity. Whoever participated and is shown is going to be judged “said the president in a ceremony at the National Palace with relatives of the victims on the sixth anniversary of the events.
He also added that there are orders against members of the Public Ministry and the Federal Police.
The president recalled that during the previous government of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018), “it was said that if the Army was involved” the institution had to be “protected” so that it would not be affected.
“I argued the opposite: if it became clear that the military had participated, it was necessary to say, know and punish those responsible and that instead of weakening the Armed Forces, it strengthened them,” said the president.
Six years since the events
According to the controversial version of the Government of Peña Nieto, during the night of September 26, 2014, the 43 students of the Ayotzinapa school for teachers were arrested by corrupt policemen in Iguala (Guerrero) and handed over to the Guerreros Unidos cartel, which he murdered and incinerated them at the Cocula garbage dump and dumped the remains in a river.
This story, known as the “historical truth,” was questioned by family members and by an investigation by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and its Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI), which stated that the bodies could not be burned in that place.
When López Obrador assumed power, a Truth Commission was created together with the families and the Prosecutor’s Office that restarted the investigation against those responsible for the disappearance and against the authorities who created a false account of the events by torturing the allegedly implicated.
In this Saturday’s ceremony, the new special prosecutor for the Ayotzinapa case, Omar Gómez Trejo, reported that the current administration launched 70 arrest warrants against municipal and federal police, elements of the Army, officials of the Attorney General’s Office and members of organized crime.
“It is the first time that an element of the federal police has been linked by the facts, It should be remembered that for a long time the participation of other police forces in the disappearance was denied, “he explained.
Important authorities arrested
He said that the capture of the former director of the Criminal Investigation Agency is being sought, Thomas Zerón, fled to Israel and accused of torturing suspects to construct the “historical truth”.
In addition to the fact that Carlos Gómez Arrieta, head of the Federal Ministerial Police, and Blanca Castillo, public prosecutor, are already arrested for the same events.
For his part, the Mexican Undersecretary for Human Rights, Alejandro Encinas, who heads the Truth Commission, presented a report on the progress of the investigation.
Stressed that “the historical truth has collapsed” after remains of one of the students were identified far from the dump where they were supposed to have been killed and an analysis of the calls that night concluded that the young men were “never together.”
