Maria Paula Castañeda Callejas had turned 15 on Monday the 14th, but due to the pandemic of the coronavirus and the bad economic situation of the family could not celebrate it. But last Saturday her older brother managed to take her to a party so he could celebrate her birthday, without imagining that tragedy was just around the corner.
Just a couple of hours after arriving at the place, in the Nueva Castilla neighborhood of the capital of Tolima, a stranger approached the girl and shot her directly in the face, to the astonishment of the attendees. Although she was quickly transferred to a health unit, the unfortunate girl died on the way.
According to the investigations, the hypotheses that the police handle would be an altercation at the scene with another woman just minutes before the attack, as well as that it could be a stray bullet.
The victim’s brother stated that “Everything happened in a matter of seconds”, and that they are not clear from where the shot that ended the life of the young woman came, who was studying high school at the Ciudad Arkalá Educational Institution.
“We only hear shots, we don’t know who shot him or why he did it”, specified the brother of Maria Paula, who also said that due to the precarious condition of his family they are now looking for help to be able to meet the funeral expenses, which amount to approximately two million Colombian pesos (about 520 dollars).
