This Wednesday, the trans-Andean media began to disseminate what would be the new official map of the Argentine territory, which includes the claims of the neighboring country in the Antarctica, including territory claimed by Chile.
It also extends maritime limits by adding the South Georgia, Shetland, Orkney and Sandwich Islands and the Wedell Sea, and as they claim, it would have been validated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which is disputed by the Chilean Chancellor Andrés Allamand.
The new map, TN reports, was entered by the Government and already approved by Congress on August 4, so it would begin to be used in schools and public institutions as part of the official cartography. The media described the adoption of the new limits as “a historical fact and full of recognition.”
Said media cites the Minister of Foreign Affairs, one of the promoters of the law, Felipe Solá, who at the time said that “the objective is to strengthen our sovereign presence, our economic activity and promote memory with concrete facts, by the heroes of Malvinas and for others who gave their lives in Antarctica ”.
“This establishment will increase legal security for the granting of concessions whose purpose is the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons, minerals and sedentary species for all the Argentine people and future generations,” he stated.
After Allamand’s rejection, the Argentine media Clarin even published an acid article questioning the Foreign Minister’s arguments, recalling that Argentines, British and Chileans have overlapping claims in Antarctica, and ensuring that the official United Nations sites do recognize Argentina ” that that portion – which is just below Tierra del Fuego – is part of its continental shelf, according to the report with its claims that this country presented in 2009 ”.
It also highlights, among other things, that – despite the claims – no country can make real use of sovereignty in the southern continent due to the Antarctic Treaty.
