Carabineros delivered this afternoon a preliminary balance regarding the departure of vehicles from Santiago during the National Holidays.
There was an 89% decrease compared to 2016, the last year the celebrations lasted three days.
More than 51,000 vehicles
According to General Manuel Valdés, the figures correspond between Thursday at 00:00 hours until this Sunday at 16:00, registering a number of 51,663 cars that left the Metropolitan region.
In addition, he commented that there were 425 accidents and 18 people died as a consequence, mainly, of “inattentive driving, driving with the presence of alcohol and not prudent speed.”
Some had to return
Regarding the sanitary cordons, 3,569 vehicles had to return to the capital because they did not have the corresponding authorization to leave the region, while 131 people were arrested, until 4:00 p.m. today, for infractions of article 318 and driving in a state of of drunkenness, among other causes.
Nationwide, more than 11 thousand cars returned to their first homes for not complying with the permits in the sanitary cordons in the midst of the pandemic.
