Many people have been arrested this Sunday by uniformed men wearing ski masks in the framework of a new day of demonstrations in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, against the reelection for a sixth term of the president, Alexander Lukashenko.

Hundreds of police and military have been deployed in the capital to avoid a new massive protest against the veteran president for the sixth consecutive Sunday since the August 9 elections were held.

Soldiers in combat uniforms armed with assault rifles have been stationed in the Palace of the Republic and the nearby streets as the protesters converged towards the city center on foot, as the authorities have closed the subway stations and mobile services the internet is cut off.

There has also been a strong police presence in front of the presidential palace, where Lukashenko, 66, has appeared twice in recent weeks armed with a Kalashnikov to prevent protesters from breaking into the building.

Previously, the opposition leader Svetlana Tijanovskaya had called on citizens to continue fighting and participate in the so-called ‘Justice March’. “Every week you show yourself and the world that Belarusians are a force,” he said in a video message.

Last Sunday an estimated 150,000 people demonstrated in Minsk.
