The Government returned to support the Carabineros after the Comptroller’s Office filed charges against 7 generals of the High Command, for their alleged administrative responsibilities after the procedures carried out within the framework of the social outbreak.
The undersecretary of the Interior, Juan Francisco Galli, said that they are confident that the defense of the generals will be able to dissuade the charges against them.
“We as a Government are sure that these charges will be able to be disproved by the generals of the Carabineros, and that clearly the operation that the Carabineros de Chile followed, during the period that followed October 18, did so under extreme conditions, “said Galli.
Despite this unrestricted defense of the institution, Galli pointed out that it is important to respect the powers of the country’s institutions.
This Wednesday and privately in a meeting with the comptroller Jorge Bermúdez, President Sebastián Piñera addressed the situation of the Carabineros, noting that respect the powers of the supervisory body.
Despite this, the opposition did not like the way in which the Government has defended the uniformed police, so yesterday the opposition benches issued a public statement showing their concern, since according to the parliamentarians “No institution of the State administration can be excluded from the control”.
This was indicated by the head of the PS bench, Luis Rocafull.
Meanwhile, the head of the Democratic Revolution bench, Giorgio Jackson, again criticized the UDI and RN for denouncing the Comptroller’s Office before the Latin American and Caribbean Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions.
The opposition parties “supported the independence of the Comptroller’s Office in the exercise of its function of ensuring compliance with the law.”
